Regarding #1 above, you will be exposed to material that is absolutely easy to understand... Regarding #2, we only focus on 3-4 measures of a song... what you learn can be applied to other songs of your own. This program offers a terrific way to eventually develop your own style. Each Piano Pop Chart consists of:

1) A three to four measure segment of a popular song in lead sheet* form

2)  An audio animation session (video) that shows you step-by-step exactly how you can interpret segment

* What is a lead sheet? A lead sheet is sheet music that have a very simple format: it consists of one staff, which displays the melody to the song, and chord symbols above that staff, which provide the chords the musician is expected to know in order to accompany that melody in an interesting fashion.

This is where many people get hung up. This includes even many classically trained pianists. You see, they are accustomed to having a grand staff in front of them, which consists of both the treble clef and bass clef, and everything is pretty much spelled out - they read the notes and they play what they read. However, unless one has at least a basic understanding of chord nomenclature (chord symbols), he or she is lost for what to do when it comes to complementing that melody line.

Piano Pop Charts get you to deal with lead sheets on a couple of levels:

1) We play the melody along with the chords represented by those symbols in a very basic fashion... for some people, this will be enough to "chew"... they will have fun playing the melody with those chords and experience the satisfaction of interpreting a lead sheet in a very basic manner.

2) We also consider how a professional piano stylist might interpret the same lead sheet by looking at the melody and these chords from a more creative standpoint. Intermediate to advanced players will appreciate this right away... beginners can have this to look forward to at a later time, as they focus on level #1 above.

You may be asking, "What do I need to know in order to take advantage of Piano Pop Charts?" I would like to acknowledge this now. The growing library of Piano Pop Charts are categorized according to what type of chord familiarity an individual should have in order to master a particular one...

At the very least, you should have some familiarity with playing triads (three note chords) in order to master the Level #1 Piano Pop Charts. For some, exposing themselves to these Piano Pop Charts will provide the incentive needed for learning those chords. So, if you choose to take advantage of the program and use a particular Piano Pop Chart to provide you will a goal to reach, that is fantastic. For example, if you take a look at the Piano Pop Chart for Misty above, you will notice that a knowledge of six particular 7th chords is needed in order to master it. This would be considered a Level #2 Piano Pop Chart. However, if you do not yet know all six of those, you can take advantage of this to provide you with the incentive to learn those six chords. So, in this respect, many people will order a Piano Pop Chart in order to set such a goal. Likewise, if you are learning your triads, you may use a Level #1 Piano Pop Chart as an incentive to learn the triads it contains. Truly, this is a great incentive program!

Once you become confident with reading lead sheets, things just aren't the same! You'll be able to put all that sheet music that might be collecting dust to use... you see, much of that sheet music consists of a grand staff, where you are shown exactly what to play with both hands. The problem with so many of these arrangements is that the publisher provides only a hint of what a song can really sound like. In other words, the "professional" aspect is missing. You may have heard that song performed... but when you go to play that music, it just doesn't come close! Well, once you experience the freedom of putting those chord symbols to use (much of that sheet music includes them), you'll have fun making it sound how you want it to sound!
